Your voice stays on your Mac.
Inkbie turns what you say into text on your Mac. Here's exactly what that means, and what happens when you add friends or buy something, in plain words.
Last updated 5 October 2026What Inkbie hears
Only what you say while you hold your talk key, or after you double-tap for hands-free. macOS shows its orange microphone dot whenever Inkbie is listening.
When you let go, the recording becomes text on your Mac and is thrown away. Voice typing never sends what you say anywhere, and it works offline.
What stays on your Mac
Your settings, your Words list and your language choice.
Your last take, in memory only, so you can paste it again with ⌥⌘V. It's gone when Inkbie quits, and you can switch it off in Settings.
Why Inkbie asks for access
Microphone, to hear you. Accessibility (called Device Control and Data Access on macOS 27), to notice your talk key in any app and to type where your cursor is.
Inkbie checks which app is in front, whether a text field has focus, and where your text cursor is on screen, so the drop can land there and its eyes can follow you typing. It doesn't read your screen or what you type.
To type, it puts the words on your clipboard for a moment, presses ⌘V, then puts your clipboard back exactly as it was.
If you sign in
Signing in is optional. You only need it for circles and the shop.
You sign in with Apple. Apple gives us an ID that only means something to Inkbie, the name you choose, and an email address. Apple lets you hide your real address behind a relay address.
On our server we keep:
- your name and that email;
- how your Inkbie looks (ink, look, outfit);
- the circles you're in;
- what you own;
- which Macs are signed in (up to two).
We keep a scrambled fingerprint of each Mac's sign-in, never the sign-in itself.
Your status
To show your circle whether you're around, Inkbie checks on your Mac whether you're in Focus or another app is using your microphone or camera. Only one word leaves your Mac: around, on a call, in Focus, busy or away. It never says which app or who you're talking to.
The word lives only on the open connection to your circle and isn't stored. Switch off "Show my status" and your Inkbie looks asleep to everyone.
Drops to friends
A drop carries your words and the recording, or a file, to the one person you name, through our server on Cloudflare.
Once it reaches their Mac, the server deletes the recording and any file straight away and blanks the words. What's left of the record is removed within about 25 minutes.
A drop that never arrives is deleted after 7 days, recording and file included.
Their Mac keeps it in their recent drops until Inkbie quits, then clears it.
When you buy something
Purchases are sold through Link, Stripe's checkout. You type your card or payment details into Link, never into Inkbie, and we never see your full card number.
Stripe tells us:
- your email;
- your country;
- what you paid, and the tax and any discount;
- the last four digits of the card;
- any promo code.
We use this for receipts, refunds and the accounts. Link keeps its own records under Stripe's privacy policy.
If you write to us
The support form and emails to support@inkbie.com reach Peter with your email, your name if you give it, and your message. If you've bought something, they're matched to your account, so Peter can see what you bought and refund it.
Replies are sent from support@inkbie.com. Messages are kept so Peter can follow up. Ask and he'll delete them.
Updates and downloads
Once a day, unless you switch it off, Inkbie asks api.inkbie.com whether there's a new version. The request carries the version you have and nothing about you or your Mac (like any request, it comes from your internet address).
The speech model downloads once, about 600 MB from Hugging Face, plus about 100 MB the first time you add a word.
Who helps run Inkbie
- Cloudflare: our server and storage.
- Apple: sign-in.
- Stripe and Link: payments.
- Hugging Face: the speech model download.
None of them get what you say to Inkbie.
Deleting your account
Settings > Circle > Delete account, or ask at support@inkbie.com. It happens straight away, on every Mac.
What goes:
- your name, email and Apple ID;
- your circle, and everyone's drops in it;
- your place in friends' circles;
- drops to and from you;
- what you own;
- your name in our activity history.
Support conversations stay until you ask for them to go too, so we can answer the request.
We keep your past orders, without your name, email or card digits, because the sales figures have to add up for tax.
Cloudflare keeps 30 days of database backups for recovery, so deleted details can sit in a backup for up to 30 days. Recordings and files aren't backed up; they go immediately.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted, by emailing support@inkbie.com. If you're not happy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au) or the privacy regulator where you live.
